June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month

Pride Month celebrates the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and related (LGBTQIA+) communities, the diversity of identities its members represent, and their fight for equal rights around the world.

While progress continues in support of LGBTQ+ communities, many challenges persist. Here’s how you can support LGBTQIA+ individuals and create a more inclusive environment.

  1. Acknowledge that others’ experiences may differ from your own. Seek to learn about the history of the LGBTQIA+ community and individual experiences.
  2. Listen to LGBTQIA+ individuals and build authentic relationships over time. Then, move beyond listening and believe and affirm that people’s feelings and experiences are valid.
  3. Use inclusive language that acknowledges diversity, conveys respect for all people, is sensitive to differences, and promotes equal opportunities. While it’s important to understand the terminology used to describe gender and sexual orientations, the higher priority is to create an environment where people feel safe.
  4. Be a role model for kindness and inclusion. Use your voice to speak out against hateful speech, bullying, or harassment. Take action to support equal rights for everyone and make the world a better place for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation.
